F4U Corsair

Nicknamed "whistling death" by the Japanese in World War II, the Corsair was one of the most feared and powerful planes to fly in the Pacific theater. Because it had an enormous engine and matching propellor, the designers had to give the wings the "inverted gull" look so that the landing gear could be short to take the impact of landing but still allow ground clearance for the prop.
